Meeting in Avdarma: Maia Sandu and Civil Society Discuss the Future of the Gagauz Language

President Maia Sandu, the team of the Civic Initiatives Center for National Minorities, and representatives of civil society from the Gagauz Autonomous Territorial Unit discussed solutions for protecting and promoting the Gagauz language, culture, and traditions in the face of current challenges.

One of the key topics addressed was the declining use of the Gagauz language, a growing concern within the community. Although the Gagauz Autonomy was established specifically to protect the cultural and linguistic identity of the region, today, an increasing number of people do not speak their native language. In this regard, the necessity of a joint effort to revitalize the Gagauz language was emphasized, through educational initiatives, cultural programs, and effective public policies. It was agreed that in the coming months, concrete solutions would be developed to support this process.

Discussions also focused on the importance of learning the Romanian language for both adults and students. The Romanian language learning program for adults has already proven to be a valuable step, but additional efforts are needed to expand access to these courses. Furthermore, the need to strengthen Romanian language education in schools was highlighted, to provide young Gagauz people with greater opportunities for integration and professional development.

The Civic Initiatives Center for National Minorities reaffirms its commitment to fostering an open and constructive dialogue between authorities and local communities. Only through collaboration and active involvement can a balanced society be built, where every citizen feels respected and supported in preserving their cultural identity.
